How to Serve

Serving is very important to table tennis because it allows the game to start and will determine how you will play and where you can expect the ball to be hit back if it is done correctly.

Here are some of the basic rules that must be abide by in a real game:

    1. The ball must be held above the table so that the umpire and your opponent can see it.
    2. The ball must be on the palm of the hand with the fingers extended and tossed upwards to at least six inches
    3. The ball must only be hit on the way down from the toss
    4. The ball must be hit behind the end line.

Topspin Serves

Forehand Topspin Serve

  1. Turn to your side so that you have a back leg and your racket arm is your back arm.
  2. Hold the racket perpendicular to the table and have the ball on the palm of your other hand slightly in front and below the racket.
  3. Bring the racket back and gently toss the ball upwards, no higher than about eye level or you might lose control.
  4. Bring the racket forward and graze it upwards as you hit it.
For more spin, hit it at a tilted upwards angle.
For more speed, hit it without tilting your racket as much.
  5. Follow through to the opposite side of your body and return to a ready stance.

Backhand Topspin Serve

  1. Face the table and have the back of your racket facing your opponent.
  2. Hold the racket perpendicular to the table and have the ball on the palm of your other hand in front and below the racket.
  3. Bring the racket closer to your body and gently toss the ball upwards, at no higher than your eye level or you might lose control.
  4. Bring the racket forward with a slow flick of your wrist and graze the ball upwards as you hit it.
  5. Follow through by extending your arm to the other side of your body.

Backspin Serves

    Forehand Backspin Serve

    1. Turn your body so that your side is facing the table with your serving shoulder the farthest body part.
    2. Hold your racket parallel to the table with the ball lying on the palm of your other hand.
    3. Bring the racket back and gently toss the ball into the air, no higher than your eye level or about six inches high.
    4. Bring the racket forward in a sideways slicing motion so that you can graze the ball downwards.
    5. Follow through with your arm almost crossing over your body and then return to your ready stance.

      Backhand Backspin Serve

    6. Stand facing the table.
    7. Hold the racket in front of your stomach and perpendicular to the table with the ball lying on the palm of your other hand.
    8. Bring the racket closer to your body and gently toss the ball into the air, no higher than your eyes or about six inches high.
    9. Bring the racket forward, tilted so that the top part is pointing at you, and slice downwards to hit and graze the ball so that there is a backspin.
    10. Follow through with your arm extended away from you and then return to your ready stance.

Advanced Backhand Sidespin Serves

    1. Standing on the side opposite to your serving hand, hold the racket in front of you, so that you are prepared to hit the ball with a backhand, and place the ball on top of your other hand in front of the racket.
    2. Turn your body and bring the racket back until you cross over your other arm and then toss the ball gently into the air to about eye level.
    3. Bring the racket back the way it came by unbending your elbow in a semi-circle but at a quicker speed to hit the ball.
    4. Have the racket tilted slightly towards you as you kind of let it slice through the air downwards and hit the ball just above the table and at the tip of the racket to give it a good graze for a better spin.
    5. Allow your arm to complete its swing and then return to your ready stance.

Advanced Forehand Pendulum Serve I

    1. Stand slightly angled away from the table in the direction of your serving hand.
    2. Place the ball in the palm of your hand in front of the racket which should be held parallel to the table.
    3. Keep arm and wrist relaxed so that it can move freely
    4. Turn your upper body backwards, bring your racket away from your body with your elbow and wrist and then toss the ball gently into the air to about eye level.
    5. As the ball falls, move your upper body, along with your arm and racket, forward in a semi-circle pattern.
    6. Hit the ball near the table on its side as you slice through the air with the racket almost always parallel to the table.
      • For a sidespin / topspin, hit the back of the ball when your racket moves up
      • For a backspin / sidespin, hit the bottom of the ball as your racket moves down
    7. Snap wrist as for a better graze especially near the tip.
    8. Pull racket through to other side of the body, either down or to the side to trick your opponent.
    9. Then return to your ready stance.

Advanced Forehand Pendulum Serve II

    1. Stand at a right angle to the edge of the table.
    2. Hold the racket up near your head, higher then the hand where the ball is lying in.
    3. Keep your arm and wrist relaxed.
    4. Toss the ball gently into the air and then swing your racket towards it.
    5. Graze the side of the ball when moving forward.
    6. The racket should be near the table at the end of the swing.
