Table Tennis Tables

Table Tennis requires the use of a ball, a few rackets, a net, a table and perhaps, some cleaning accessories for a successful game. There are different types of each due to many manufacturers to suit the skill and preference of the players. Finding the one that is best for you could help you with your game and allow you to become better.

Tables and Nets

It is best to have regulation tables and nets at the right lengths especially if you are going to have matches. A table should be nine feet long [274cm], five feet across [152.5cm] and must be two and a half feet [76cm] off the ground. It should be a dark colour, usually black, blue or green, that contrasts with the white lines marked on the table and the balls used in play. The lines are 0.75 inches [2cm] thick and are drawn lengthwise to show the respective parts of the table reserved for those playing doubles. Its consistency should be such that when a ball is dropped from a height of one foot [30 cm] from the surface of the table, that it should bounce back up to between 8 and 9 inches [20-23cm]. The net must stretch across the table just barely touching it at a height of six inches [15.25cm].

Both the net and table come in a variety of qualities and range in price. Better tables and nets, usually purchased for real tournaments can be over a $1000 but if this is just for practice or for fun at home, then pretty good cheap ones can be considered. The only problem with cheaper varieties is that over time, they will not be as precise. For example, if you keep knocking the ball into the net, the net will start to droop and not maintain its position or if the table is placed on soft ground, compared to hard surfaces, the table may not be perfectly horizontal.
